The Public Transport Ticketing Corporation (PTTC) is responsible for managing the progressive implementation of the new smartcard ticketing system for customers and public transport operators across greater Sydney.
In September 2011 the NSW Government announced that the new smartcard ticket would be called Opal.
Opal will provide customers with a simple, fast, convenient and value for money transport ticketing option.
The system will use proven technology and back office systems, comparable to London’s Oyster card. But it will be designed to suit the unique requirements of greater Sydney’s public transport system and environment.
